The King of Thailand is considered the protector of all religions within the kingdom.

Our production of Jesus Christ Superstar, which uses a Muslim, a Christian, and a Buddhist in the three main roles, presents the ideal of Thailand as a land of tolerance and openness to all religions and philosophies.

In a world that has become increasingly filled with divisiveness and prejudice against those who are different, Opera Siam wishes to present this work as a small plea from a small country, for harmony, understanding and reconciliation.

The Production

Opera Siam’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar reaches out towards audiences of all ages and all faiths.  Controversial when it first came out almost fifty years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar was officially endorsed by the Pope in 1999 and is now acknowledged as a masterpiece and is the work that created the career of Andrew Lloyd Webber, the most popular music theatre composer of all time.

Starring a Buddhist, a Muslim, and a Christian in its three main roles, this production is, in the words of director Somtow, “a small plea from a small country to move away from the divisiveness and mistrust that is growing in today’s world.”

จีซัส ไครสต์ ซุปเปอร์สตาร์ ของโอเปร่าสยามเป็นการแสดงสำหรับผู้ชมทุกเพศ ทุกวัยและทุกศาสนา  แม้จะได้รับการวิพากวิจารณ์อย่างหนักเมื่อเปิดแสดงครั้งแรกประมาณ 50 ปีมาแล้ว เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2542 ได้มีการลงนามรับรองการแสดงนี้โดยองค์สันตะปาปา  ทั้งยังเป็นที่ยอมรับว่าเป็นผลงานดีเด่นซึ่งเป็นจุดแรกเริ่มของชื่อเสียงมหาศาลของแอนดรูว์ ลอยด์ เวบเบอร์ ในฐานะผู้ประพันธ์ละครเพลงที่ได้รับความนิยมสูงสุดในโลก

สมเถา สุจริตกุล ผู้กำกับการแสดงกล่าวว่า “การเลือกดาราจากสามศาสนามาแสดงนำในเรื่องนี้คือคำมั่นจากประเทศเล็กๆ เพื่อหลีกหนีการแตกแยกและความไม่ไว้เนื้อเชื่อใจซึ่งเพิ่มมากขึ้นในโลกปัจจุบัน”

The first professional production originating in Thailand to be officially licensed by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group Ltd., this is the full symphony orchestra version with a 60-piece orchestra provided by the international award winning Siam Sinfonietta conducted by Thailand’s leading young conductor, Trisdee na Patalung.

Athalie de Koning, celebrated jazz songstress, performs the role of Mary Magdalene.  Pure The Voice plays the challenging role of Judas and Pop Chaiporn, most recently seen in Madama Butterfly as Goro, has his rock musical debut as Jesus.  Andrew Biggs as King Herod is one of the many celebrity cameos.  Australian bass Damian Whiteley appears as the high priest Caiaphas.  This is a top notch cast drawn from the worlds of jazz, opera, soul, and popular media.

Director Somtow envisions this production in authentic costumes and sets that bring first-century Jerusalem to life, with an ensemble cast of sixty and iconic imagery drawn from famous paintings of the Renaissance. 

Playing for three performances on the weekend of February 1, 2019, Jesus Christ Superstar plans to pull in and reach out to many new communities with a world-class production, providing in an addition a major event for tourists who are spending the holiday season in Bangkok

แอธาลี เดอ โคนิง ดารานักร้องเพลงแจซเด่นดัง รับบท แมรี แมคดาลีน เพียว เดอะวอยซ์ ในบทท้าทายความสามารถได้แก่ จูดาส์ และป็อป ชัยพร ดารามหาอุปรากรซึ่งประสบความสำเร็จสดๆ ร้อนๆ จากบท โกโร ใน มาดาม บัตเตอร์ฟลาย จะเปิดตัวในฐานะนักร้องเพลงร็อคครั้งแรกด้วยบทพระเยซูคริสต์ แอนดรูว์ บิกก์ส หนึ่งในดารารับเชิญทั้งหลาย จะแสดงเป็นกษัตริ์เฮโรด และเดเมียน

ไวต์ลีย์ เจ้าของเสียงเบสส์ลือชื่อรับบทพระอาวุโสสูงสุด สรุปได้ว่าการแสดงครั้งนี้ประกอบด้วยนักแสดงระดับสุดยอดแห่งโลกแจซ โซล มหาอุปรากร และสื่อยอดนิยม

 การนำเสนอ 3 รอบแสดงในช่วงวันหยุดปีใหม่เป็นแผนงานเพื่อให้ผู้ชมจากชุมชนใหม่ๆ ได้สัมผัสการแสดงระดับโลก นอกจากนั้น ยังเป็นรายการใหญ่ซึ่งจะเป็นจุดสนใจของนักทัศนาจรต่างชาติที่เดินทางมาเยือนประเทศไทยในเทศกาลเฉลิมฉลอง

 ผู้กำกับการแสดงสมเถา สุจริตกุล มองเห็นภาพการแสดงครั้งนี้ในรูปแบบดั้งเดิมทั้งเครื่องแต่งตัวและฉากกรุงเยรูซาเล็มสมัยคริสต์ศตวรรษที่หนึ่ง นักแสดง 60 ชีวิตกับภาพวาดมีชื่อจากจินตนาการแห่งยุคฟื้นฟูศิลปวิทยา(Renaissance)
