Twenty-five years of Opera Siam
The 2025/6 Season opened with Opera in Paradise — a full opera produced in a beautiful resort on Koh Chang, and then repeated again in our new state of the art venue, the Great Hall of King’s College in Bangkok — provided through the generous sponsorship of King’s College International School Bangkok. This was followed by a spectacular revival of Somtow’s opera Mae Naak starring Barbara Zion and Martin Ng. Concerts included the Gorecki Third Symphony, Strauss Four Last Songs, The Rite of Spring, and Mahler’s Fourth Symphony.
Upcoming events in the next few months include a new production of Orfeo ed Euridice, the original Vienna Version in a production whose design is inspired by Buddhist cosmology, and an evening of Love Songs of the Renaissance on May 10. Later in the year, a performance in the Thailand Cultural Center of the Queen Sirikit Concerto in memory of Her Majesty the Late Queen Mother, as well as an event commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Bayreuth Festival and the 20th anniversary of the first Wagner production in Thailand by Opera Siam, to which Katharina Wagner herself has been invited to preside. The last opera in 2026 will be a new Opera in Paradise production of Gianni Schicchi.

Opera Siam, entering its Twenty-Fifth Year, is ASEAN's full-service opera, providing a rich season of established classics, innovative new works, contemporary opera, and world premieres of operas by Asian composers. It was the first opera company in the region to present the operas of Richard Wagner, Massenet's Thaïs, Britten's The Turn of the Screw and The Rape of Lucretia, Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle, Hans Krasa's Brundibar, Gustav Holst's Savitri, and the world premieres of a dozen operatic and balletic works by its Artistic Director, Somtow Sucharitkul, a visionary who is one of the handful of living opera composers in the world with a recognized and substantial corpus of operatic works that is performed around the world.
In the coming season there will be the May new production of Opera Siam’s very first production, Madana, the first new opera of the 21st Century and the opera that started it all in Bangkok! Also, a touring production of The Silent Prince, and much more!
